What is a textile definition?
Eugene textile center has opened its doors for the first time since it closed in 2010 to help textile designers and manufacturers create a new kind of label, one that focuses on the process of making garments, rather than the final product.
The Eugene textile industry is in crisis, with the textile and garment industry suffering from high unemployment, high levels of debt and a shortage of skilled workers.
The company is trying to address this by offering a new type of label: a definition of a textile.
The definition, which has the potential to bring in more than $500,000 in investment and create thousands of jobs, was developed by a panel of experts from the Eugene University’s Department of Industrial and Materials Engineering, the Eugene-based nonprofit Eugene Institute of Technology and the Eugene Center for the Study of Technology.
The goal is to provide designers and manufactures with a “living document” that they can use to better understand the process, the company said in a statement.
“Eugene’s textile definition helps designers and companies get a more clear picture of the design and process they need to produce garments, and the quality they need,” Eugene textile owner John Arbon said in the statement.
The new label was developed with the help of an independent, nonprofit agency called the Eugene Institute for Technology, which Arbon founded in 2004.
The Eugene Institute is part of a consortium of businesses, including Eugene-area fabric manufacturers and apparel manufacturers, that have come together to create a model that’s open to the public.
The organization has created the Eugene Textile Definition, a website that lists the materials that make up textile.
The definition lists specific characteristics of each of the five types of textile, and includes a link to the Eugene Fabric Industry Guide.
A definition that focuses solely on the manufacturing process will be created by a group of independent consultants and manufacturers, Arbon and Eugene textile executive director Chris Rupp said.
The designers and producers can access the information through the website, which includes a number of links to the definition.
The designers and makers will have access to the most recent version of the Eugene definition, Arbons said.
“We think it will provide us a way for the industry to get back on its feet and provide information to manufacturers and designers,” Arbon added.
The concept of a label has been around for some time, but it’s been lacking the visibility of the fabric industry.
The idea of a “design-by-committee” model to produce a new label for a new industry is something many textile companies are embracing.
It’s also an idea that has been on the radar of the textile industry since the recession hit.
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, the U.S. textile industry lost about 7,000 textile jobs in the first quarter of 2015, the largest monthly loss since the Great Recession ended in December 2009.
While the textile industries have experienced a dramatic drop in the last several years, the industry has not fully recovered, according to a report by the Eugene Research Institute.
The institute found that the textile sector was still the second-largest source of jobs for non-agricultural workers in the U
